The coaching clinics are designed to help coaches develop a sound understanding of how to coach the event, building on the technical content presented on the Coaching Assistant and Athletics Coach Award.

These training and education opportunities are aimed to bring together coaches and their athletes to train and develop expertise in their respective fields of interest.

The sessions will involve practical activities using athletes to demonstrate key coaching points with clear take home messages for both coach and athlete going forward.

We will look at setting up an effect block start position for the athlete and their technique under acceleration. During the session, we will look at effective drills and activities that can improves the athlete’s acceleration technique.

Who will deliver: The session will be delivered by experienced, national-level coaches who will clearly and simply demonstrate how to develop efficient and effective techniques for sprints and hurdles within a club environment.

Who can attend

Coaches with a Coaching Assistant and Athletics Coach qualification (or equivalent).

Coaches can bring an athlete as a demonstrator on the day.


This workshop will run from 10am to 1pm


Places are free to scottishathletics coach members with a valid coaching licence.

Coach lead

Jared Deacon

Jared is a former International 400m athlete who competed at every major senior international championship through a 10 year career, where he won a relay gold medal for Great Britain at the 2002 European Athletics Championships and for England at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Jared is a Level 4 Performance Coach in the 400m/Relay, and has been fortunate enough to have worked with elite athletes from many different sports in a career in strength and conditioning as well as being a sports specific coach working with sprinters and hurdlers in athletics, where he worked with many of Great Britain's next generation of elite and Olympic athletes, including Rio Olympic bronze medallist Emily Diamond in the 4 x 400m.
