England Athletics will be hosting its third National coach and athlete jumps workshop covering long jump, high Jump and pole vault. The workshop format will be based around theory and practical sessions.

These workshops are designed to engage as many coaches as possible and bring the coaching community together and have an open and shared learning environment.

10 place are available per event group so please book early

The presenters for the national day are:

Egryn Jones - pole vault

Before qualifying as a secondary PE teacher from UWIC in 1996 Egryn Jones competed for Wales mainly in the Pole Vault. He also represented Wales as a decathlete and a hurdler. Throughout his athletics career he searched for support and ended up training in Horsham for the 1998 Commonwealth Games with the national coach. While training he required an income working in schools, various promotions later he became Head of a Physical Education department in Redhill. This was followed by 12 year as Director of Sport position in Slough. His athletic career ended with a diagnosis of spondylolisthesis. A qualified Athletics coach since 1991 but focussed his coaching skills mainly after his athletics career in 2002. He is now a level 4 performance coach having attended a European and two World championships, represented Britain by working for the IAAF in 2009, coached two Olympic pole vaulters, British and Canadian and coached many athletes to British records, junior and senior. Egryn has also worked on workshops for UKA and been regional coach for the London and South of England areas. He has a serious passion for performance.

Darren Ritchie - long jump

As an international athlete, Darren gained a vast amount of international sporting experiences over a 10 year period, representing Great Britain in the European Cup, and Scotland in two Commonwealth Games, where he placed fourth in 2002, and a finalist in 2006. During this time, Darren broke the Scottish long jump record and became the first Scottish athlete to jump over 8 metres In his coaching career, Darren has worked with some of Scotland’s finest young talent; coaching athletes from 16 years of age through to senior level, successfully coaching them to major championships at the Commonwealth Games and on the World stage

Darren has work for Scottish athletics for the last 17 years in various roles which include National Coach for Horizontal Jumps, National Event Manager for Jumps and Combined Events, Performance Manager, and Head of Coach Development. During this period Darren was completing his MSc in Performance Coaching part-time. Darren has developed a strong coaching theory and philosophy from valuable experiences gained from coaching alongside, sharing best practice with and learning from world-class Olympic coaches from America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, Europe and the UK.

Joy Bray - high jump

Joy is a UK Athletics Level 3 Performance coach working with high jumpers in the Bristol and South West area. A coach for 18 years, her athletics background is middle-distance and cross-country. At U17, she took 800m bronze in the national age-group championships and won team golds at English Schools and the national cross-country championships, representing Hertfordshire and Watford Harriers.

Joy has been a member of the NCDP for 8 years, attending workshops and seminars at home and abroad. She was part of the coaching and management team at the 2016 Loughborough International meeting, and team leader for the young English high jumpers at the 2017 Hustopece Skakani in the Czech Republic.

As well as coaching children aged 5-18 at the South Gloucestershire and Stroud College Athletic Academy, Joy oversees the sprint coaching of students at the University of West of England. She regularly coaches local club high jumpers to national age-group standard, and several have won national age-group medals.

Joy has worked for many years with children and families in schools and children’s centres, in practitioner and leadership roles. She is currently completing her Post-graduate diploma in Play Therapy and working as an independent play therapist.


The workshop will run from 9.30am until 5pm


These workshops are for event group coaches or (old level 3 and above)
