who is the workshop aimed at

This workshop is predominantly aimed at leaders that have completed their Leadership in Running Fitness (LiRF) and/or Coach in Running Fitness (CiRF) qualification.

This includes leaders / coaches from both Running clubs and RunTogether groups.

The workshops may also be of particular interest to participants who are currently supporting running groups without being formally qualified but are looking to book onto a qualification.

what will the day cover

The Run Leader Development Days are back for 2018. As before the Run Leader development days are a three part series taking place in October, January and March. Each day will start promptly with registration at 9:45am and end at 15:00pm.

The Second workshop in this years series will focus on:

10:00 - 13:00

• Progression opportunities for runners (end of a beginners course, impact of leaders/ club (resources), examples of how runners are helped to progress, level of competition) - information and group discussion

• Training for 5km and 10km - group task via case study

• Planning and developing engaging sessions for mixed ability groups – group practical

• Leaders questions (upon arrival leaders will be asked to write down questions they would like answering) - information and group discussion


13:00 - 15:00

This workshop will give detailed information on the differences between the roles and the steps leaders will take as they take a coaching qualification. It is engaging and interactive giving all participants an opportunity to share experiences and build support networks as well as clearly detailing the pathway to becoming a coach. It is delivered through talking and practical activity.

The workshop is for people who are currently qualified Run Leaders* who are looking to progress to the Coach in Running Fitness Course.

You will cover, through a mix of practical sessions and relevant theory:

The difference between a leader and a coach

  • How athletes develop
  • How learning takes place
  • Technical elements of endurance running
  • Planning a training programme
  • Coaching knowledge and skills to develop
  • What the CiRF course entails

*Run Leaders should hold the Leadership in Running Fitness qualification and have a current DBS check

Chris Hollinshead has delivered the Run Leader development days since conception in 2015. As lead tutor for the LiRF qualification he has worked with both new and established leaders and coaches for many years. Chris is lead endurance coach for the Paralympic talent development camps, Mentor on the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) Programme for endurance athletes and is an Endurance coach for his resident club Cannock and Stafford AC.
